Is a Destination Wedding Actually Cheaper? Here’s the Real Answer.

Let’s clear this up once and for all.

One of the most common reasons couples explore a destination wedding is to save money. And one of the most common reasons they hesitate? Because someone told them, “You know, destination weddings aren’t actually cheaper.”

So… what’s the truth?

Let’s break it down.

The Short Answer: It Can Be, If You Want It To Be.

A destination wedding can absolutely cost less than a traditional hometown wedding, especially in comparison to those locations where weddings are the most expensive, like New York City, most of New Jersey, Chicago, Houston, and parts of California, like San Francisco and Los Angeles. But whether it actually does depends on the choices you make, the experience you want, and how many guests attend.

Here’s what you’re not told: you have more control over the budget than you think.

One of the biggest reasons destination weddings are cheaper is because the guest count is smaller, but there are other reasons for major savings when having a destination wedding!

Where You Can Save Big

  • Venue Fees: most domestic weddings come with a  venue rental fee, but there are a lot of free venue options at all inclusive resorts.

  • Food & Drink: while most people think that this is free at all inclusive resorts, private events that include food and beverage are usually at a cost, but that cost is half of what it is at most venues in the states.

  • Décor: most resorts include white tables, white chairs, a small amount of florals and drapery for the ceremony, but with the beautiful backdrop of the ocean and the gorgeous resort, do you really need more? Even if the answer is yes (it was for me!), the décor is so much less expensive than back home.

  • Perks and Promos: free rooms, upgrades, flights, cash back, and so much more! Hotels offer so many promos that put money right back in your pocket.

  • Planners: your planner is usually included in your package with the resort and with a Barefoot Bridal Destination Wedding Specialists (completely complimentary) by your side, you can save big in this department!

Where Costs Can Creep Up

  • Travel: your flights and an extended stay can definitely become costly, but you can also consider this a built-in honeymoon and consider it a savings instead!

  • Vendor fees: if you’re bringing your own vendors, that can incur travel costs and/or outside vendor fees at a lot of resorts (which can also be waived at a lot of properties).

  • Additional Events: your guests aren’t just coming for one night, so you probably want to have a welcome event, a beach bash, a departure brunch, or even a group excursion and that can add up. But not everyone has all these added events and a lot of resorts include them for free!

So… Is It Cheaper?

Most of the time, yes. And almost all of the time, it’s a better value.

But most importantly? It’s an unforgettable experience.
