My Honest Review of Dreams Los Cabos

Spoiler alert: I LOVED my stay at Dreams Los Cabos!

Dreams Los Cabos is located in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, which means you would fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo are on the Baja California Peninsula, located where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet. The area is a beautiful mix of desert lanscape, golden beaches, and stunning rock outdrops. You can be facing the beach and behind you are the Sierra de la Laguna mountains.

Speaking of beaches, the first thing to note is that this resort is not on a swimmable beach and that is not uncommon for the area. You can visibly see the strong currents and I can understand why the resorts are reluctant to allow their guests to go into the water. You are not allowed to even dip your toes in. I know because I tried and they whistled to me to get away from the water, whoops! They have people day and night checking to make sure no one goes into the water.

There are swimmable beaches that you can be taken to and we did an excursion that took us to a swimmable beach and that was perfect. The beach itself is gorgeous. You can sit on the beach in a lounger enjoying the view and your kids can play in the sand. They have beachside service along with poolside service. And the service is excellent.

I was booked in a Preferred Club room, so we were taken to the Preferred Club lounge for our check-in. We arrived around 11:30am and check-in is at 3:00pm. They held our bags while we went to grab a bite to eat at the Seaside Grill. I got ceviche and the waiter informed me that it is a small portion, so I also ordered the fish tacos. We went back to the lounge to hang out in some air conditioning while we waited for our room to be ready. Once our room was ready, we received our room key and were told to stop by the bell boy desk and let them know what room we were in so they could bring us our luggage.

The room was very nice and clean with a more traditional feel and an ocean view. The bathroom is completely closed off, so there are no issues with privacy. There is only one sink and the shower has a large tub, which as someone who is vertically challenged, I found it difficult to get in and out of the tub.

The resort is on the smaller side, which I prefer, especially for smaller groups. We had a centrally located room, which was nice. The resort itself is very clean and well kept, the grounds are beautiful with lovely foliage, cacti, agave, aloe plants, and iguanas of various sizes.

In the middle of the resort is the (very, very) large infinity family pool where all the entertainment usually goes on and where the swim-up bar is located. The building where the lobby and rooms are sit a little higher than the family pool which also sits a little higher than the children’s pool. There is a water slide from the infinity pool to the children’s pool. Right in front of the children’s pool is a large area for events. Photos of the beautiful view from the lobby, our ocean view from the room, some iguanas, and the overall grounds, the infinity pool, plus an event set up, the wedding gazebo (day and night).

Behind the large patio area for events is the beach. The beach is large, clean, and beautiful, with the ocean amazing shades of turquoise, teal, and deep blue. Barefoot Grill (burgers, hot dogs, wings, quesadillas, nachos) and the beach bar are right to the side of the children’s pool, on the beach.

On the other side of the children’s pool is Portofino (Italian) and World Cafe (the buffet). Seaside Grill (seafood for lunch, but a steakhouse at night) is right next to the family pool. There is also an adults only pool on the other side of the building, which is also where Oceana (seafood) is located, and where the wedding gazebo is. This area is much quieter and I can see it being a bit more secluded and private for a wedding. Bordeaux (the French restaurant) was located near the lobby, behind the gift shop.

Speaking of the gift shop, every day they set up a little area right by the family pool with beach and pool related items like toys, floats, sunscreen, beach toys, etc. This is genius because we had a toddler with us, but no toys packed for her. She was pleased as could be to just be in the pool all day, but at one point I went and got her some beach toys (bucket, shovel, etc.) and she was as content as could be in the sand for the rest of the afternoon. It saved me from walking all the way to the gift shop. You can charge it to your room if you left a card on file at check-in or you can use Apple Pay! Photos below of my god daughter playing with her toys, coloring during breakfast, and playing in the Preferred Club Lounge while we waited for our room to be ready. Note: they would not allow us adults to stay with her at the Explorer’s Club which was a really big bummer since we had gotten her so excited for the splash pad.

The entertainment team was great. They had activities all day long and they were really engaging with the guests in the family pool. The toddler we had is a very shy 3 year old and even she got excited to play one of the games they were playing (where you had to use a mini golf club to knock a tennis ball into a donut in the pool). They did a movie on the beach every night where they lined up the beach loungers and put on a movie on the projector. Not every movie was a kid’s movie, it seemed like they tried to appeal to all ages by putting different movies on. For instance, one night was an animated movie, but another night was Elvis.

The bar service, the beach and poolside service, the service at all the restaurants, everyone was amazing! The service was great, they were all friendly, and offered help with a smile. Even when I approached an employee who spoke no english and used my very, very bad spanish, he tried to understand me and help me out!

The best part of the hotel was probably the food. Other than Seaside Grill, for lunch we also had the Barefoot Grill, room service, and World Cafe. Everything was so good. For dinner, we ate at Portofino (I had the filet mignon and my friend had the ossobucco), an Asado Night (one night, they hosted an Asado Night with grilled meats, fish, veggies, etc., and a show; I’ve seen these events at other resorts and sometimes a special dinner like this costs extra, but this was included for all guests), Bordeaux (I had the escargot and the salmon in a puff pastry), and Oceana (I had the tuna ceviche and salmon in a red pepper sauce). On the last night we split up and it was a hard call between going back to Bordeaux or trying Oceana, but my friend went back to Portofino because she loved it so much. Coco Cafe is open 24/7 and they have hot and iced coffee and tea, icees, crepes, pastries, ice cream, fresh fruit, and sandwiches. This was great for the toddler who got either an eclair or a chocolate truffle every day after lunch.

Even though we had a free 20-minute massage and access to the hydrotherapy circuit because we booked the Preferred Club room, we didn’t have time to partake in this, so I can’t comment on the spa, but my experience with other AMR properties is that the spa is great. I usually love their hydrotherapy circuits!

We did, however, take an excursion with Cabo Paradise Tours with an Amazing Captain a glass bottom boat, Chicago (note: the glass bottom is a rectangle in the middle of the boat). It was a 45-minute boat tour of the famous Arch, lover’s beach, and divorce beach, and at the end they dropped us off at a swimmable beach. I loved, loved this tour! This was probably our favorite part overall. The ocean is so, so clear, you can see all the tropical fish swimming around even without the glass bottom. We saw sea lions asleep on the rocks in the ocean, pelicans swimming alongside us, a sea lion swimming around. The arch is so beautiful in person and the swimmable beach had clear, calm waters and golden sand. I highly recommend doing this excursion. To get back from the beach, we ordered an Uber and it cost us, with a tip, $15 to get back to the hotel.

This would be an absolutely excellent resort to have a child-friendly destination wedding. The view is beautiful, there was no seaweed on the beach, the service is great, and the food is delicious. What more could you ask for!?

Want more information on how to get married at a Dreams property? We can also help plan vow renewals, elopements, anniversary trips, family trips! I definitely recommend Dreams Los Cabos if you’re looking for a great time for your family!
